Day-by-Day

Day 1: Seattle to York
Left Seattle on Wednesday, May 4. Connected in Detroit to London Gatwick. By the time I landed in London it was Thursday. Took the train to King's Cross station, where I caught the train to York. Spent the rest of the day walking the city walls and otherwise wandering around York.

Day 2: York
Rose early, wandered around getting early-morning photos. Took the guided walking tour of York. Visited Clifford's Tower, the remains of the old York castle. Visited the Castle Museum. Spent a lot of time in York Minster.

Day 3: York to Fort Augustus
Caught the early train to Edinburgh, and then from there another train on to Inverness. Les picked me up in Inverness and took me on to Fort Augustus with a stop at Urquhart Castle on the way. Got settled in Crianlarich (the house not the town), then Les drove me out to Glendoe for the scenery.

Day 4: Fort Augustus
Visited Nan for a while, then mostly just wandered around town, revisiting the old schoolhouse, the village and the Caledonian Canal.

Day 5: Fort Augustus
Again, just wandered around town, and found my way back to Battery Rock.

Day 6: Harris and Lewis in the Outer Hebrides
Left early and caught the ferry from Uig on Skye over to Tarbert on Harris, in the Outer Hebrides (AKA the Western Isles). Visited Hushinish, then up into Lewis for Gearannan, Carloway Broch and the Callenish stones. Stayed overnight at a B&B near Callenish.

Day 7: Harris and Lewis in the Outer Hebrides
Back to the Callenish stones again, then back down to Harris for amazing beaches at Luskentyre, then on to St. Clement's Church. Back to Tarbert for the ferry back to Skye. Good views of the Cuillins, Eilean Donan Castle, and the Five Sisters of Kintail.

Day 8: Fort Augustus
More wandering around the village, revisiting the old Almshouse where we lived for a while, the park, and the site where we lived in a tiny caravan for a while. Helped stack a lot of firewood.

Day 9: Glenfinnan and Mallaig
Day trip to Mallaig with Les and Nan. Saw the Glenfinnan viaduct, the Glenfinnan Monument, beautiful beaches near Arisaig, Mallaig, the Loch nan Uamh viaduct, The Devil's Staircase, and highland cattle.

Day 10: Fort Augustus
Deer in the back yard, checking out the abbey, and walking up the Corrieyairick.

Day 11: Fort Augustus and area

Day 12: Fort Augustus to Carlisle
